Professional Profile

Betsy Cohen defends physicians, nurses, physician assistants, and other healthcare providers in medical malpractice and professional license actions, and provides guidance to hospitals, medical facilities, physician practices, and healthcare practitioners on regulatory and government compliance issues. Prior to joining Weathington, she practiced healthcare law at BakerHostetler, an AMLaw 100 firm, where she worked closely with subject matter specialists on sophisticated payment matters including Medicare and other payor reimbursement, 340B Program requirements, medical staff, and credentialing.

Prior to BakerHostetler, Betsy served as an Assistant Attorney General with the Georgia Department of Law in the Regulated Industries and Professions Division. In this role, she provided legal counsel to state professional licensing boards (including the Georgia Composite Medical Board (GCMB), the Georgia Board of Nursing, and Georgia’s psychology and counseling boards), prosecuted board disciplinary cases before the Office of State Administrative Hearings, negotiated settlement consent orders, and advised on statutory authority for rulemaking.

Betsy’s deep institutional knowledge is rooted in her previous tenure as the staff attorney and compliance manager for the GCMB, where she oversaw licensee monitoring and the Wellness Committee, and provided guidance to the Board on investigative, licensing, and disciplinary matters. Betsy has expertise in practitioner impairment cases and worked extensively with the Georgia Professional Health Program. Earlier in her career, Betsy handled child abuse and neglect cases for departments of social services in New York and Massachusetts. Today, she utilizes her extensive background in state and federal regulation to provide clients with strategic guidance on complex medical malpractice and administrative litigation and other regulatory matters.
